PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health has confirmed that 29 samples were taken in for laboratory testing (16 directly contacts and 13 patients with flu-like symptoms) in relation to a bird flu case in Prey Veng province, and all have thus far tested negative.

Secretary of State Dr. Or Vandin, on Monday, 27 February 2023, said that the H5N1 bird flu situation in Roleang village, Romlech commune, Sithor Kandal district, Prey Veng province, is now under control.

She said that after an 11-year-old girl died from the virus last week, as of 26 February 2023, only two cases have been confirmed in the lab so far (including the girl). The 11-year-old's father was the second person to test positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, and was taken to be treated at a district hospital.

Dr. Or Vandin confirmed that after receiving treatment, the man took another test and it came back with a negative result on Monday morning, however, he still remains in hospital to complete his medical treatment course.

The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health urges citizens to continue being careful and to be mindful of personal safety, take precautionary measures by washing hands with soap and clean water regularly, especially avoid touching or making any contact with sick or dead birds, and to only eat food that is well cooked.

The Ministry further calls on all citizens to report any suspected cases of bird flu to local health authorities, to seek immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital if suspected of infection, or call the 115 hotline.
